Language tips

❶ Blaze的本来含义中，有“在树皮上刻痕指示（道路）”之意，而“trail”就是痕迹的意思，blaze the trail就是在荆棘中找到了路，是个习语，意思就是开了先河，奠定了基础等。

“开辟了新的道路”就可以用blaze a new trail来表示。

❷ Crucial juncture用来形容事情进展到了一个“关键时刻”，比如：At this crucial juncture he lost his head and made a serious mistake.（就在这关键时刻，他头脑发昏，犯了严重的错误。）

❸ Talk shop除了指“清谈馆”，还常用来指“说行话，三句话不离本行”。比如你来同事家做客，刚进门坐下，同事就说："Let's not talk shop"，这可不是说不要谈商店，意思其实是咱们别谈公事。

❶ Huffington Post把报道的注意力放在了有关气候变化的《巴黎协定》，世界上温室气体排放量最大的两个国家批准了该协定，说明两国对于改善气候变化现状有志于采取实际行动，而不是停留于“清谈”。

❷ “协议”知多少

Accord：指双方在就某事存有许多共同点之下达成的协议，并且是双方完全自由，不受任何强迫下达成的共赢协议。

Pact：是为了停止争端，纠纷，战争等而签的协议。因此中国的清朝政府所签的那些卖国协议，只能用pact，不能用accord。

Protocol：一般指为某种可能发生的事件或情况而准备的行动方案。比如：Emergency Response Protocol就是“应急预案”。

Agreement：是协议/合同最常用的叫法。大多数的英文合同都以“Agreement”命名。比如：Security Agreement (担保协议)，Deposit Account Control Agreement (账户控制协议)以及Share Subscription Agreement(认股协议)。

❶ 贸易壁垒（trade barriers）又称贸易障碍，指的是对国外商品劳务交换所设置的人为限制，主要是指一国对外国商品劳务进口所实行的各种限制措施，一般分非关税壁垒（non-tariff barrier）和关税壁垒（tariff barriers）两类。

Barrier既可以指具体的栅栏、障碍，也可以指抽象的屏障、分界、隔阂，比如age barrier（年龄障碍）、language barrier（语言障碍）、racial barrier（种族隔阂）等等。

例如：

❶ BBC报道将“清谈”翻译成empty talk。Avoid empty talk意思是少说空话多干实事。英语中的习惯说法，Talking the talk is not as good as walking the walk，用在这里也是很合适的。

❷ 习主席指出，因为市场动荡(volatile markets)与贸易低迷(feeble trade)，世界经济正处于“关键当口”(crucial juncture)。因此国际社会对本次杭州G20峰会抱有很高期待(have high expectations)，可见此次杭州峰会的重要性。

❶ 和BBC报道一样，《金融时报》的报道也指出世界经济处于critical juncture，各国领导人都饱受国内一系列经济问题的困扰，在这篇报道中用了on the defensive这个表达，意思是“采取守势”，换言之就是只能守不能攻，无还击之力，已然是焦头烂额。

❷ 习主席对“关键当口”做了进一步阐释，即上一轮科技进步带来的增长动能(growth driver)逐渐衰减(fading)，而新一轮科技和产业革命又尚未形成势头(has yet to gain momentum)，gain momentum的意思是“势头增大，发展加快”。

❸奥巴马也指出，本届G20峰会将继续注重包容性、可持续的发展(inclusive and sustainable growth)，同时他也承认，目前国际秩序正面临压力(under strain)。

❶ Roll out开头的短语，我们最常见的就是roll out the red carpet，铺开红毯（迎接某人），这一次杭州峰会期间，各国领导人的专机到达时都受到了红毯迎接。

在这里，roll out protectionistic measures指“推出保护主义措施”，类似于launch/take measures的用法。

❷ Uphold their pledge这里uphold是“坚持、维持”的意思，比如，法庭“维持原判”就是uphold the original decision；pledge在这里是“保证、许诺”之意，也就是说，各国领导人原来说过不会实行新的保护主义措施，习主席希望大家都信守承诺，说话算数。
